Island Art By Noni Floyd

Island Art by Noni blends the tropics with the East by showcasing Noni’s latest Island Art Gallery. A blending of Bali and Asian art with Hawaiian comes naturally to longtime Kailua resident Noni Floyd. She was born in Sumatra, Indonesia (Noni meaning little girl) and grew up in a Lanikai home filled with Balinese village landscapes and Asian silk paintings. Working in Okinawa in the early ‘70s as an Art Specialist for the Army, Noni developed a technique of staining rag paper to produce the look of aged silk. The evolving result today is a vintage Asian style that blends positive with negative space in her Hawaiian flora and fauna, and where tropical landscapes are framed in Balinese foliage.

Noni went through Kailua schooling all the way: Kailua Elementary, Kailua Intermediate, Kailua High School, graduating with the class of 1969. From her early school days she connected with any art aspects of units, still recalling the her enthusiasm drawing maps in world geography, the water cycle in science, and the book report cover for language arts. She loved having her Island Art Gallery up for display in her first actual art classes in intermediate school and continued with art classes in high school.

Noni obtained a Bachelor of Science in Art Education at the University of Puget Sound and received a Masters in Curriculum Studies through the University of Hawaii Manoa. She was an art teacher in public and private schools for years prior to returning to Lanikai. She has been an Artist Teaching Partner through the Hawaii Arts Alliance, and the art teacher at Kailua High School up to her retirement. A highlight of her long art career was being one of ten artists from Hawaii to create an ornament for the White House Christmas Tree and attending the White House’s unveiling of the tree event in 2002. Take a moment to enjoy Noni’s Island Art Gallery and order anything that catches your eye.
