Native birds are such a part of the Hawaiian culture and some are common aumakua. In Hawaiian mythology and culture an aumakua is a personal or family god that originated as a deified ancestor and which takes on physical forms. The Pueo, a subspecies of the short-eared owl is endemic to Hawaii and is one of the more common of the various physical forms assumed by these ancestor spirits in Hawaiian culture and within today’s Hawaii Fauna Art. Pueo inhabit forests and grasslands throughout the islands of Hawaiʻi. Their numbers seem to be declining, especially on the island of  Oʻahu , upon which they were at one time numerous. Pueo is listed by the state of Hawaiʻi as an endangered species on the island of Oʻahu.

The Hawaii state bird is the Nene goose and is also endemic. It is thought that the Nene evolved from the Canadian goose which most likely arrived to the Hawaiian islands about 500,000 years ago, shortly after the the chain of islands were formed. Considered endangered in the past, through conservation Nenes’ numbers are increasing. The big island of Hawaii has several endangered honey creepers in the forests. Our Ohia forests which are in decline are affecting the life of these honey-creepers. The Akiapolaau is a rare Hawaiian honeycreeper in forests above 5,000 feet elevation. It is bright yellow and appears bigger-headed and shorter-tailed than other honeycreepers. The long, thin upper bill can be hard to see. The ʻiʻiwi or scarlet honeycreeper is a more common species. The ʻiʻiwi is a highly recognizable symbol of Hawaiʻi and is the third most common native land bird in the Hawaiian Island. Hawaii Fauna Art creator Noni was born in Sumatra Indonesia and loves the Indonesian style which has a folk art quality. In painting images of Hawaiian native birds, Noni uses this style for surroundings and backgrounds.
